Protein: ATF3_HUMAN

Cyclic AMP-dependent transcription factor ATF-3

FUNCTION: This protein binds the cAMP response element (CRE) (consensus: 5'-GTGACGT[AC][AG]-3'), a sequence present in many viral and cellular promoters. Represses transcription from promoters with ATF sites. It may repress transcription by stabilizing the binding of inhibitory cofactors at the promoter. Isoform 2 activates transcription presumably by sequestering inhibitory cofactors away from the promoters. more...

SUBUNIT: Binds DNA as a homodimer or a heterodimer.

ALTERNATIVE PRODUCTS: Event=Alternative splicing; Named isoforms=2; Name=1; Synonyms=ATF3; IsoId=P18847-1; Sequence=Displayed; Name=2; Synonyms=ATF3-delta-Zip; IsoId=P18847-2; Sequence=VSP_000592; Note=May be produced at very low levels due to a premature stop codon in the mRNA, leading to nonsense-mediated mRNA decay;

SIMILARITY: Belongs to the bZIP family. ATF subfamily.

SIMILARITY: Contains 1 bZIP domain. WEB RESOURCE: Name=NIEHS-SNPs; URL="";
